Adopt a Rhino - Gift Details
By adopting a rhino, you can help “Care for the Wild International” to continue improving the lives of these beautiful creatures
Regardless of their tough appearance, black rhinos have been hit hard by poachers. But now it’s your chance to help the rhino come storming back!
Help “Care for the Wild International” continue their fantastic work and various projects protecting these creatures that have been injured, orphaned or require continually longer-term care.
Black rhinos are seriously dying out. Between 1970 and 1992, populations dropped by 97% to just 2,300, owing to rampant poaching for their horn.
The biggest threat facing rhinos today is the demand for their horn, which is used in traditional Asian medicine, mostly for the treatment of fevers as well as a multitude of other illnesses, and to make the handles of ceremonial daggers in the Middle East. As a result of improved protection and a ban on international trade in rhino horn, the population has climbed to around 3,100, however the threats still continue.
Care for the Wild International runs an adoption programme for orphaned black rhinos in Kenya in tandem with the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (DSWT), whereby rescued orphans are brought to the Trust’s sanctuary in Nairobi National Park. Numerous carers are involved with the day to day care of the little rhinos, acting as surrogate mothers. They feed them with bottles of milk, take them out to the bush every day and tuck them in at night. It’s through this that the orphans have an excellent chance of survival – if given the proper care, these tough animals can recover quickly!
Not only will your adopt a rhino gift contribute towards Shida’ care, it will also support CWI’s rhino protection work around the world.
