Brief History of Rugby
Rugby originated from the game of football in the nineteenth century. Students at Rugby School used to regularly enjoy a kick-about, but rarely used traditional football rules. Legend suggests that William Webb Ellis came up with the idea of running with the ball in 1823. He caught the ball during a football match and immediately ran with it in his hands towards the opposition’s goal. This new way of playing the game was an instant hit and it became the standard way to play football at the school. The game continued to develop and was soon passed on to other clubs, such as Blackheath and Guy’s Hospital FC. Rugby became considered a separate sport when the Football Association rejected many of these new rules. Official laws of rugby were declared in 1845 and the Rugby Union formed in 1871.
The Six Nations Cup – formerly known as the Home Nations and then Five Nations Cup – has long been considered the most prestigious rugby tournament in the Northern Hemisphere. The Tri Nations Cup is similarly important in the Southern Hemisphere. The Rugby World Cup was introduced in 1987, enabling the two hemispheres to compete together for the same trophy. New Zealand, Australia and South Africa have all since won the event. England won the World Cup in 2003, becoming the first nation from the Northern Hemisphere to win the tournament.
Highlights of The Rugby Book
Our Personalised Rugby Book celebrates the success of each of the home nations. The gifts open with articles on England winning the inaugural Five Nations tournament in 1910 and Scotland’s first ever victory against England at Twickenham. Other early landmark matches include England beating the All Blacks and South Africa in 1936 and 1969 respectively, plus Ireland’s Triple Crown success in 1948.
The main focus of these terrific Gift Books is the history of the Six Nations and Rugby World Cup tournaments. In the 1950s and 1960s, England and Wales enjoyed much success in the Five Nations Cup. Wales won the Grand Slam for the second time in three years in 1952 and won the tournament in consecutive years between 1963 and 1966. Wales also earned Five Nations success in 1979 and achieved Grand Slam victories in the Six Nations Cup in both 2005 and 2008.
In addition to Wales’ success, the Rugby Book includes reports on Grand Slam wins for England in 1957, 1991 and 2003. We also incorporate Ireland’s Five Nations win in 1985 and their impressive victories against England and Italy in the 2007 competition. Scotland won the last ever Five Nations tournament in 1999 with a win over England in extra time. The Rugby Gift Books also feature Scotland’s 20-16 win against France and 18-12 defeat of England in the 2006 Six Nations event.
The Rugby Book contains reports on every World Cup final since the beginning of the tournament in 1987. A highlight of this coverage is England’s dramatic victory against Australia in 2003, when Jonny Wilkinson scored a winning drop-goal in the dying seconds of extra-time. England was one of the favourites to win the Rugby World Cup in 2003, but they reached the final as underdogs in 2007. The gifts look back at England’s victories against Australia and France in the latter stages of the tournament, before recounting the final against South Africa. The Rugby Book contains a host of other classic World Cup encounters, such as Wales’ 16-3 win against England in the 1987 Quarter Final and England’s win against Australia in 1995. There is also a report on France’s terrific comeback against New Zealand in the 1999 World Cup Semi Final.
