This George Best book opens with Best’s debut for Manchester United as a seventeen year old against West Bromwich Albion on the 15th September 1963. In the newspaper report of his first match, he was said to have ‘showed encouraging flashes of quality’ and had a ‘hand in United’s winner’. From this promising start he developed into a footballing legend, delighting fans with his exquisite skills.

Best made an immediate and lasting impact. Many of his memorable games are covered in the George Best Book, as reported in the newspapers at the time. This George Best Book also covers the Best’s tremendous performance to help Manchester United beat Benfica to win the European Cup, scoring one of the three goals in extra time. George Best’s superb goal against Nottingham Forest in October 1969, also features. It was described by Sir Matt Busby as ‘It’s one of the great goals of all time. I can’t remember seeing one much better’. On the pitch he was a genius, recognised by his award of European Footballer of the Year in 1969.

Off the pitch, Best had a colourful and turbulent life. These George Best Books cover the ups and downs of his personal life – the girls, the drink and the rifts with his clubs. We also cover newspapers reports of some of his comebacks, including those at Fulham and Hibernian.
