Enjoy a Newspaper History of the Sky Blues

Coventry City FC was founded in 1883 and the club began to enjoy success in the 1930s. Clarrie Bourton became one of the top centre forwards in the country and the Sky Blues soon rose to the Second Division. Coventry missed promotion to the top flight by just one point in 1938 and the Second World War unfortunately destroyed the club’s momentum. The Sky Blues finally entered the First Division in 1967, under the management of Jimmy Hill. Coventry finished the season in sixth place three years later, earning the club qualification for European competition. The Sky Blues stayed in the top flight for an impressive thirty-four year run, despite coming close to relegation on multiple occasions. The fighting spirit of the side was also evident in Coventry City’s 1987 FA Cup win. In a match often described as one of the best ever finals of the competition, Coventry came back from behind to beat Spurs 3-2.

Coventry City Football Book Coverage

This Coventry Football Book opens with an FA Cup tie against Nottingham Forest in 1910. It goes on to include a selection of other great games through the decades of the 20th Century and many highlights from the present era.

Top stories in our Coventry Football Book include the 8-1 thrashing of Crystal Palace in 1935 and the 4-1 defeat of Leicester City in the 1952 FA Cup. You can also read about the appointment of Jimmy Hill as Manager in 1961 and Coventry becoming Division Three Champions in 1964. The Sky Blues would go on to become Division Two Champions in 1967 and an article on this great win is also featured in the Coventry Book. Coverage turns to European competition as it moves into the 1970s. The Gift Books incorporate several exciting encounters on the continent, including the 2-1 defeat of Bayern Munich in 1970. Relive the glory of Coventry’s historic 3-2 win over Spurs to secure the FA Cup in 1987 and the team’s battles against the top sides of the Premiership. The Gift Book also reflects upon the ending of an era at Highfield Road, with the 6-2 pounding of Derby County in the last ever match at the old stadium.

Newspaper coverage continues right up to the end of last season. This unique insight into Coventry City’s history makes these books truly memorable Coventry gifts and a great addition for a collector of Coventry City memorabilia.
