Brief History of Preston North End FC
Preston North End FC was formed in 1880 and the club became a founder member of the Football League in 1888. The Lilywhites won the inaugural league championship in style, remaining unbeaten for the season. No other football club finished a top flight season unbeaten for over a century, but the feat was eventually matched by Arsenal in 2004. Preston North End also won the FA Cup in 1889 and thus became the first team to achieve the league-cup double. The club remained one of the best sides in the country over the following years, defending the First Division title in 1890 and finishing as runners-up in the league in 1891, 1892 and 1893. As rivals improved and the original team of “Invincibles" began to disband, the Lilywhites’ league form started to decline. They were eventually relegated in 1901. The club returned to the top flight in subsequent years, but form remained inconsistent. Preston North End continued to move between leagues and have since become champions of the other three football tiers. The team enjoyed more consistency in cup competitions, reaching many FA Cup finals and winning the trophy in 1938.
Did you know…
Preston North End originated as a cricket club and almost became a rugby team in 1877. It was decided that the local competition would be too strong for a new rugby side to be successful. Three years later, the club chose football as their new main sport.
The Lilywhites play home games at Deepdale Stadium. The ground, originally named Deepdale Farm, was built in 1860 and was initially used for cricket and rugby matches. Preston North End FC has played at the stadium since the club’s formation and the Lilywhites are the only founder member of the Football League to remain at their original ground. Deepdale therefore became home to the National Football Museum. The ground was redeveloped in the 1990s and it now holds a capacity of over 23,000 supporters.
