Brief History of Middlesbrough FC
Middlesbrough FC was formed by members of the local cricket team, during a meeting at Albert Park Hotel. The club enjoyed amateur success before permanently turning professional in 1899. Boro won promotion to the top flight within three seasons and stayed in the First Division for twenty-two years. The team’s best result was a third place finish, achieved in 1914. The club has since alternated between the top two tiers of football, winning many Second Division titles. Middlesbrough reached three cup finals in the 1990s and success increased in the new millennium. Steve McClaren became manager of the club in 2001 and Middlesbrough went on to enjoy one of its most successful periods to date. Boro finally won a major trophy in 2004, beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1 in the League Cup final. The win also enabled Middlesbrough to qualify for European Competition for the first time. Boro reached the last sixteen of the 2005 UEFA Cup and went all the way to the final in the following season, twice coming back from a 3-0 deficit.
Did you know…
Boro has the highest proportion of locally-born season holders in the country. 80% of match-goers were born in either Middlesbrough or the surrounding area. The high number of local fans has ensured a strong link between the club and the community. Middlesbrough Football Club in the Community was founded in 1995 by Boro chairman, Steve Gibson, and it is the largest community-based football scheme in England.
Middlesbrough FC played at Ayresome Park for over ninety years, but the club was forced to relocate following the Taylor Report’s insistence upon all-seated stadia. Boro moved to the Riverside Stadium in 1995, which was then the biggest arena to be built in England since the Second World War. Capacity now stands at over 35,000 supporters, following expansion in 1998, and the ground has hosted international football fixtures. The old gates from Ayresome Park were erected outside the Riverside stadium in 2005, providing a link between the past and present at the club.
