Brief History of Ipswich Town FC
Ipswich Town FC was founded as an amateur football side in 1878. The team turned professional in 1936 and were elected into the Football League two years later. The Blues enjoyed their first major success in 1961, under the management of Alf Ramsey. The club became champions of the Second Division, winning promotion to the top flight. Incredibly, Ipswich Town won the First Division in the following season and thus qualified for the European Cup. Ramsey quit the side in 1963, causing the Blues’ progress to stall. Bobby Robson eventually took over as manager in 1969, achieving a revival of Ipswich Town. The club won the FA Cup in 1978, the UEFA Cup in 1981 and finished runners-up of the First Division in 1981 and 1982. Robson left the club to manage the national football team, just as Alf Ramsey had done years earlier. Both Ipswich Town managers were eventually knighted and inducted into the English Football Hall of Fame.
Did you know...
Ipswich Town FC is nicknamed “The Blues" as the club has worn a blue home strip since turning professional. The team is also known as “The Tractor Boys" in reference to the agricultural links to the town. The name was coined during the club’s first appearance in the Premier League. Birmingham City fans sang “no noise from the Tractor Boys" during a comfortable win against Ipswich Town and the nickname stuck. Ipswich fans soon began to refer to themselves as the Tractor Boys, poking fun at their club’s lack of fame in comparison to the other Premiership sides.
Ipswich Town has played at Portman Road since 1884. The ground was one of the first to use goal nets and it became the first all-seated stadium following the Taylor Report. Significant redevelopments were carried out in the early 2000s, which increased capacity from 22,000 to over 30,000. Statues of Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson are featured outside the ground and the stadium has hosted international fixtures and rock concerts.
