Personalised Christmas Card Packs
Christmas Trivia – The History of Christmas Cards
The first ever Christmas card was produced in 1843. English artist John Calcott Horsley designed a Christmas card for inventor Henry Cole, as Cole had been too busy to write his own personal greetings. The front of Horsley's card featured a drawing of a family enjoying their Christmas dinner. This image was surrounded by pictures of children taking part in acts of charity and religious symbols, such as holly and ivy. "A Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to You All" was written at the bottom of the card. 2050 of these Christmas cards were printed and sold, but only one of these original Xmas cards has survived.
The custom of sending cards at Christmas caught on instantly. Santa Claus began to feature prominently on Xmas cards in the 1920s, following a vivid description of his appearance in the 'New York Times'. Coca Cola had also been running a Santa Claus advertising campaign at the time. Another popular image used in Christmas Card packs has been the Red Robin. Victorian postmen were nicknamed "Red Robins" due to their striking red uniforms. When postmen began to deliver Xmas cards, images of red robins delivering gifts and letters became a popular Christmas picture.
