Newcastle United Personalised Football Diary
Fantastic Diary Gifts for Newcastle Fans!
Newcastle United FC formed in 1892, when Newcastle East End FC moved across the city and took over Newcastle West End FC. The two local football teams had formed from cricket clubs and although the East End team had been the more dominant side, the merger was prompted mainly due to the financial problems of the western club. Originally, the Magpies played in a red strip, but constant colour clashes with other sides in the Second Division led United to change to the famous black and white stripes. Some suggest black and white was chosen in reference to the habit worn at a monastery close to St James’ Park. However, others allege that the strip was a reference to a pair of magpies that used to nest in the Victorian Stand.
The Newcastle kit has become just as iconic as the entertaining football the club has always strived to produce. Our Personalised Newcastle United Diaries look back at twelve of the best Newcastle FC games since 1950, featuring fascinating match reports from our newspaper archives. Starting from the month of your choice, these A5 Diaries are a terrific gift idea for a fan of the Magpies and will suit any occasion.
Diary Highlights
These Personalised Newcastle United Diaries begin in the early 1950s, with two of the Magpies’ famous FA Cup wins. In 1951 the club beat Blackpool 2-0, and the next season, Arsenal FC were beaten 1-0. Newcastle became one of the most popular teams in the country and although by the mid 1960s, form had declined and the club had fallen into the Second Division, Newcastle FC fought back and beatBolton 2-0 to guarantee promotion in 1965.
The A5 Diary skips forward to the 1990s and the introduction of former player Kevin Keegan as manager. Form had been wavering once more and the club had fallen down the table in the Second Division. The Magpies were nearing bankruptcy, but Keegan’s presence galvanised the side. At the end of the season, a 2-0 win at Grimsby ensured an unlikely promotion to the Premier League. Sir John Hall invested in the club and secured things in the boardroom, as ‘King Kev’ polished the performances on the pitch. In 1994, Newcastle United beat Antwerp 0-5 in the UEFA Cup, before eventually winning the tie by an incredible 11-2 aggregate.
The Diary Gift features one of Keegan’s last matches at the club: the 7-1 victory against Spurs in 1996. Although the managerial position would change rapidly over the coming years, the Magpies kept on entertaining fans; particularly with their performances in Europe. Kenny Dalglish was Keegan’s successor and he steered Newcastle to the runners-up position in the Premiership in 1997 with a 5-0 victory against Nottingham Forest. This was especially important, as it guaranteed Newcastle United a Champions League spot. The Magpies were placed in a ‘Group of Death‘, but their first game ended in a remarkable 3-2 victory against FC Barcelona. Four years later, Newcastle beat 1860 Munich 3-1 in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. In 2004, Newcastle thrashed Sochaux 0-4 in the main competition on the way to the quarter-finals.
